Cane Chairs

I finally found two great little petite chairs for the front of our living room.  I’ve been searching for a pair of Lewittes caned wingback chairs for over a year, but not having much luck.  I had a saved Craigslist search and these popped up in the next town over, so I decided to go for it.

Before:

The burgundy fabric was not going to work for me and the padding was a little flat, so I decided to try having something reupholstered for the first time.  The recovering of the chairs cost seven times what the chairs themselves cost, but I am so pleased with how they turned out.  The upholsterer added padding to the seat and back cushions, and even made the back of the seat cushions follow the curve of the back of the chairs.

I chose a fabric by Richloom – Olson Cement.  It is a nice putty color in a subtle herringbone pattern.

I love the caning, and with a little Restor-A-Finish on the wood, I think they will clean up really nicely.  The size is perfect for under the front windows in the living room and they don’t block traffic in and out of the room.  The best thing about them is they are good short-people chairs.  I (at 5’3″) can sit all the way back in the chair and the front of the seat hits the back of my knees with my feet flat on the floor.

I think Habitual Rearranger fits me well because I am never settled on designs, colors, or placement of items in our home. I drive Bradley crazy sometimes, but I keep figuring out new and better ways of doing things! I am not striving to be profound or an expert on anything in this blog. It is simply a way to keep a record of all of my adventures - home and life - for me to reference and also for my loved ones to follow along. I am a born and raised Georgia girl. I don't think I would enjoy living anywhere except the south. Bradley and I spent six and a half years in our starter home and are now in our forever home, a 1970s traditional two story brick house. I love getting into all kinds of projects around our house, and I try to document all the dirty details here if for no one else than for me.

  1. Leslie, I have some wing back chairs that need to be reupholstered- where did you go to have it done?

    1. Hi Angie! I used a shop on Roswell Road called Joy Upholstery. They are super nice and they had the chairs back to me in two weeks (and that was after waiting 3 days for me to get the fabric to them). I had used them once before to make some decorative throw pillows and I was so impressed with their craftsmanship. I would definitely recommend them! https://www.yelp.com/biz/joy-upholstery-marietta

        1. Not at all. The reupholstering cost $590. My chairs required 11 yards of fabric – the one I chose came in at about $140. Fortunately, the chairs only cost $100. So, after all was said and done, each chair was $415. I figure that’s still less than new chairs from a run-of-the-mill furniture store (though I pretty much always buy furniture second-hand, so what do I know 🙂 ).
