We bought what we call our forever home in 2014. It is a 1973 traditional four-sided brick home with a little over 3 acres of land. Though there were quite a few areas that need complete remodeling, there were a lot of my wish list items packed into this house – side-entry two-car garage, a basement for storage, solid wood interior doors, a covered front door, plenty of space to hold family get-togethers, and a dedicated office on the main floor for Bradley. Added bonuses were the screened-in porch, original wood windows, large overhangs, wood floors throughout the main floor, and a finished room in the basement.
Exterior
So far, I’ve painted the front door and the shutters, and I’ve worked on changing out the shrubs in the front bed.
Foyer
There is a dedicated foyer area, which is nice, but the first floor is lacking a closet or space for guests to hang coats and purses. Eventually, the foyer and stairwell will be the same color as the rest of the downstairs.
Living Room
The living room is on the front side of the house with the dining room directly behind it. The spaces are very open to one another and I thought it would make for great entertaining. We’ve added custom vintage arm chairs, a pair of loveseats, a vintage coffee table and dresser, an etagere, curtains, art and throw pillows.
Dining Room
The dining room overlooks our wooded back yard. We used our existing dining table and added new upholstered chairs from Home Decorators, a buffet table from and That!, turquoise curtain panels from Tuesday Morning and a new chandelier from Joss & Main. The botanical artwork is a DIY project using second-hand frames and plates from an old book.
Kitchen and Breakfast Area
The kitchen layout is a little wonky, and I hope that we can completely remodel it at some point. In the meantime, we put in a new gooseneck faucet, replaced the fluorescent light fixture, added a pendant light over the sink and under-cabinet lighting, painted the walls, and reconfigured the dry bar to house our microwave.
The kitchen, dining room and living room are painted Requisite Grey by Sherwin Williams (at 75% color saturation).
Den
Our den sits behind the garage and leads to the screened in porch. The room is one of the darkest rooms in the house because of how it is situated between the garage and covered porch, so in 2015 we added sun tunnels to this room to help brighten it up. We spend most of our time in this room and on the porch.
I’ve painted this room twice at this point and it has gone through several furniture arrangements. It is Requisite Grey by Sherwin Williams (at 50% color saturation). This room has a big emphasis on comfort, not as much on style, so we added a sectional with recliner and two slipper chairs to maximize seating. The biggest change I have considered for this room is adding small windows on either side of the fireplace and building a new mantle that extends to built-in cabinets on either side under the windows.
Office
The office is also on the front of the house, with convenient access to the bathroom and kitchen. For the longest time we staged with existing furniture and art that came from all corners of the old house. In 2018, we scrapped everything and started over. We went with a dark, moody charcoal on the walls and mid-century style furnishings. The paint color is Westchester Gray by Sherwin Williams.
Main Bathroom
The bathroom on the first floor has a textured treatment on the walls and countertop that I hate, but have resigned myself to live with it until we are ready to remodel the entire room, which is way down the road. The paint can for this room’s color was not in the basement when we moved in. It is a little more green than the guest bedroom color (Roaring Mountain by RL), so when I did some touch-ups, I had Sherwin Williams color-match it for me.
Master Bedroom
Upstairs, we have three bedrooms, including our master bedroom. The room is very large and spans from the front to the back of the house. I painted our bedroom a custom color that I had mixed at our old house. The changes I’m hoping to do in this room are to make custom curtains, replace the carpet with wood floors, remove the popcorn ceiling texture and add a ceiling fan.
Master Bathroom
The attached master bathroom is painted Rainwashed by Sherwin Williams. After a shower pan leak, we did a small remodel to the room that expanded the shower and retiled the floor. We will go back and replace the vanity and mirror in the future. I painted the vanity Dover White by Sherwin Williams and added Martha Stewart hardware in polished nickel. We also updated the vanity light and the commode during the remodel.
Guest Bedroom
The guest bedroom is on the back side of the house and is painted Roaring Mountain by Ralph Lauren (color-matched at Sherwin Williams). For this room, I would like to replace the carpet with wood floors, remove the popcorn ceiling texture and add a ceiling fan.
Guest Bathroom
The guest bathroom is across the hall from the guest bedroom. It same layout as the bathroom on the main floor and it sits directly over the other. I’ve painted the room Requisite Grey by Sherwin Williams (at 50% color saturation). The vanity is painted Anchors Aweigh by Sherwin Williams (at 150% color saturation). Eventually, I’d like to tile the shower to the ceiling, change out the floor tile and install a new, taller vanity.
Spare Bedroom
The third bedroom upstairs is painted Knitting Needles by Sherwin Williams (75% color saturation). I wanted to try out navy in our house – I went with an ikat circle quilt, polka dot sheets, and solid navy curtain panels that the previous owner had left – and then found coral pieces to use as accents. This room houses a spare full-size bed, a leftover accent table from the old house, an antique side table I inherited from my aunt and an antique rocking chair from Bradley’s grandfather. My goals for this room include replacing the carpet with wood floors, removing the popcorn ceiling texture, and adding a ceiling fan.
Craft Room
There is one finished room with an attached half bathroom in the basement. It has two large windows, so it definitely doesn’t feel like a basement room. I will be using this room for crafting, sewing and gift-wrapping and storage. I painted the walls above the chair rail Porpoise by Behr (a color left by the previous homeowners). I also added pegboard for organizing tools.
Laundry “Room”
The laundry hook-ups in this house are in the unfinished part of the basement. The dryer vents through a piece of wood that holds a window open – classy. This is the first remodel I would like for us to tackle. We have gone back and forth about the placement of the laundry. Our best solution to date, is to eventually expand our master closet and put a washer and dryer upstairs.
