House Tour

We bought what we call our forever home in 2014.  It is a 1973 traditional four-sided brick home with a little over 3 acres of land.  Though there were quite a few areas that need complete remodeling, there were a lot of my wish list items packed into this house – side-entry two-car garage, a basement for storage, solid wood interior doors, a covered front door, plenty of space to hold family get-togethers, and a dedicated office on the main floor for Bradley.  Added bonuses were the screened-in porch, original wood windows, large overhangs, wood floors throughout the main floor, and a finished room in the basement.

So far, I’ve painted the front door and the shutters, and I’ve worked on changing out the shrubs in the front bed.

There is a dedicated foyer area, which is nice, but the first floor is lacking a closet or space for guests to hang coats and purses.

Living Room

The living room is on the front side of the house with the dining room directly behind it.  The spaces are very open to one another and I thought it would make for great entertaining.  We kept the existing paint color and just staged our existing furniture.  We’ve added a coffee table (Craigslist find), curtains, art and throw pillows.

Dining Room

The dining room overlooks our wooded back yard.  We kept the existing wall color and have staged our existing furniture.  We added a jute rug from Overstock, turquoise curtain panels from Tuesday Morning and a new chandelier from Joss & Main.  The botanical artwork is a DIY project using second-hand frames and plates from an old book.

The kitchen layout is a little wonky, and I hope that we can completely remodel it at some point.  In the meantime, we put in a new gooseneck faucet, replaced the fluorescent light fixturepainted the walls, and will be adding a new coat of Dover White by Sherwin Williams to the cabinets.

Breakfast Area

We also have an eat-in area in the kitchen that I can take or leave, so it might get absorbed into the kitchen somehow when we are ready to renovate.

Our den sits behind the garage and leads to the screened in porch.  The room is one of the darkest rooms in the house because of how it is situated between the garage and covered porch, so in 2015 we added sun tunnels to this room to help brighten it up.  We spend most of our time in this room and on the porch.

painted this room and staged the room using our existing furniture, adding a matching table lamp and two C-frame end tables.  We purchased two recliners to take the place of a loveseat/ottoman combination.  This room has a big emphasis on comfort, not as much on style.  The biggest change I have considered for this room is adding small windows on either side of the fireplace and building a new mantle that extends to  built-in cabinets on either side under the windows.

All of the first floor, except the office and bathroom, is painted Gobi Desert by Behr.

The office is also on the front of the house, with convenient access to the bathroom and kitchen.  We kept the existing paint color, Roaring Mountain by Ralph Lauren.  The room is staged with existing furniture and art that came from all corners of the old house.  We were gifted a great little tufted blue velvet loveseat when Bradley’s grandparents moved to an assisted living apartment.  It fits under the window in this room perfectly.

Main Bathroom

The bathroom on the first floor has a textured treatment on the walls and countertop that I hate, but have resigned myself to live with it until we are ready to remodel the entire room, which is way down the road.  The paint can for this room’s color was not in the basement when we moved in.  It is a little more green than the office color (Roaring Mountain by RL), so when I did some touch-ups, I had Sherwin Williams color-match it for me.

Craft Room

There is one finished room with an attached half bathroom in the basement.  It has two large windows, so it definitely doesn’t feel like a basement room.  I will be using this room for crafting, sewing and gift-wrapping and storage.  I painted the walls above the chair rail Porpoise by Behr (a color left by the previous homeowners).  I also added pegboard for organizing tools.

Laundry “Room”

The laundry hook-ups in this house are in the unfinished part of the basement.  The dryer vents through a piece of wood that holds a window open – classy.  This is the first remodel I would like for us to tackle.  We have gone back and forth about the placement of the laundry.  Our best solution to date, assuming everything can be framed the way we want and lines run, is to use the bar nook in the breakfast area and part of the office on the main level to carve out a laundry room.  That would require relocating the office doorway to the foyer.  I would love to use slim french doors in the foyer if that is the renovating route we choose.

Master Bedroom

Upstairs, we have three bedrooms, including our master bedroom.  The room is very large and spans from the front to the back of the house.  I painted our bedroom a custom color that I had mixed at our old house.  The changes I’m hoping to do in this room are to make custom curtains, replace the carpet with wood floors, remove the popcorn ceiling texture and add a ceiling fan.

Master Bathroom

The attached master bathroom is painted Rainwashed by Sherwin Williams.  After a shower pan leak, we did a small remodel to the room that expanded the shower and retiled the floor.  We will go back and replace the vanity and mirror in the future.  I painted the vanity Dover White by Sherwin Williams and added Martha Stewart hardware in polished nickel.  We also updated the vanity light and the commode during the remodel.

Guest Bedroom

The guest bedroom is on the back side of the house and is painted Roaring Mountain by Ralph Lauren (color-matched at Sherwin Williams).  For this room, I would like to replace the carpet with wood floors, remove the popcorn ceiling texture and add a ceiling fan.

Guest Bathroom

The guest bathroom is across the hall from the guest bedroom.  It same layout as the bathroom on the main floor and it sits directly over the other.  I’ve painted the room Gobi Desert by Behr (color-matched at Sherwin Williams).  We finally had a plumber out and fixed the leak in the drain we discovered after we moved in.  I reused a curved shower curtain rod left by the previous owner and found an acceptable shower curtain/liner in the right length.  Eventually, I’d like to tile the shower to the ceiling, change out the floor tile and install a new, taller vanity.

Spare Bedroom

The third bedroom upstairs is painted Cottage White by Behr (color-matched at Sherwin Williams) to blend into the trim so that the linens and decorative accents can stand out.  I wanted to try out navy in our house – I went with an ikat circle quilt, polka dot sheets, and solid navy curtain panels that the previous owner had left – and then found coral pieces to use as accents.  This room houses a spare full-size bed, a leftover accent table from the old house – I painted the metal base coral, and an antique side table I inherited from my aunt. My goals for this room include replacing the carpet with wood floors, removing the popcorn ceiling texture, and adding a ceiling fan.
